Candidacy is determined through an in-person physical evaluation, medical history review, and realistic goal setting.
✓ Good Candidates
- If the skin lifts up easily and you can see firmer tissue underneath — you likely need a brachioplasty.
- If it's mostly thick, fatty tissue and very little 'curtain' lifts — you likely need liposuction first, possibly without skin excision.
- If it's a mix of both — you need a combined arm lift + liposuction. This is what most patients actually need.
✕ When to Wait or Reconsider
- Active smokers. Smoking dramatically increases wound breakdown on the arm. I require a 4-week pre-op and 4-week post-op smoke-free window — no exceptions.
- Unstable weight. If you are still actively losing or planning to lose 10+ kg, wait. Your skin envelope will keep changing, and we will be operating on a moving target.
- Uncontrolled diabetes (HbA1c above 7.5), severe heart disease, untreated thyroid issues, and active autoimmune flares. All must be optimized first.
- Body Dysmorphic Disorder. If you have had 3 or more cosmetic procedures and still feel 'something is wrong', we need a longer conversation, not a new surgery.

A standard brachioplasty takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A mini arm lift takes 60-90 minutes. Extended brachioplasty after massive weight loss can take 2.5 to 3.5 hours. When combined with another surgery (tummy tuck, breast lift), the total time may be 4 to 6 hours.
2. Is arm lift surgery painful?
Most patients rate post-op pain at 5-6 out of 10 on Day 1, peaking at 6-7 around Day 3, then dropping quickly. By Day 7, most patients are off prescription pain medication. The arm feels tight and pulled rather than sharply painful. Pain is well controlled with oral medication and is rarely the limiting factor in recovery.
3. Will my scars be noticeable?
Yes, there will always be a scar. We hide it in the inner bicipital groove of the arm, which is invisible when your arm is relaxed at your side. With proper care (silicone gel, sun protection, no smoking), the scar fades to a fine pale line within 9 to 12 months.

5. Can an arm lift be done through the armpit only — scarless?
Only if you have very mild laxity in the upper third of the arm. In that case, a mini arm lift hides the incision inside the armpit. If you have loose skin extending toward the elbow, a true 'scarless' arm lift is not possible — anyone offering it for moderate-to-severe laxity is misleading you, and the result will be poor
6. What is the difference between arm lift and arm liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat only. An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes both excess skin and fat. If your problem is mostly fat with a good skin tone, liposuction is enough. If you have loose, hanging skin, no amount of liposuction will help — you need a brachioplasty. Most patients in our clinic need a combination of both.
7. Can I get an arm lift after bariatric surgery?
Yes — but timing matters. You should be at least 12-18 months post-bariatric, with stable weight for the last 6 months, and a BMI below 32 (ideally below 30). If you are still losing weight, the skin will keep changing, and the surgery should be delayed.
8. How long do arm lift results last?
Permanently. The excised skin does not grow back. The new contour is yours for life, provided your weight stays reasonably stable. Aging continues, but from a much better starting point.
