Of all the cosmetic surgeries I do, a breast lift is one of the most personal. More than the result, what brings most of my patients into the consultation room is something they say almost in a whisper: "I just want to feel like myself again." After fifteen-plus years of operating, I'll tell you what I tell every patient in my Vijayawada clinic: your breasts are not the problem. Your relationship with how you've changed is. And we can address that — surgically, yes — but only if the why is clear, the timing is right, and the expectations are honest.

If a surgeon promises you "no scars" for a breast lift, leave. Any genuine mastopexy involves removing skin, which leaves a scar. The skill is in placing the scar where it hides, healing it well, and matching the technique to your anatomy.

Patients fly in from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, the Middle East, the US, and the UK. Many tell me they could have done it locally. They chose to come here because three things matter: the surgeon's hands, judgment, and willingness to say no. I have said no to patients who weren't ready. I have postponed surgeries because the husband or mother wasn't on board. This is not a sales-friendly approach. It is what an ethical surgeon does. It is also why we have the practice we have.

What Is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

A breast lift — medically called a mastopexy — is a surgery that reshapes and elevates sagging breasts. Imagine a breast as a glass of water inside an elastic balloon. Over the years of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and gravity, the water reduces, the balloon stretches, and what was once full and high settles lower, leaving empty skin around it. A breast lift takes that stretched balloon, removes the excess material, retails it, and lifts everything back to where the volume sits.

Anatomy & Surgical Foundations

  • What a breast lift DOES • Removes excess, stretched skin • Repositions the nipple and areola higher on the breast mound • Reshapes the breast into a more youthful contour • Reduces the size of an enlarged areola, if needed • Restores the upper-pole fullness that bras used to provide
  • What a breast lift DOES NOT do • It does not significantly increase your breast size. • It does not give you the "upper-pole roundness" that only an implant or fat transfer creates. • It does not stop further aging — but it sets the clock back by 10–15 years. • It does not erase stretch marks — though it may remove some, depending on the incision pattern.

If you only read this table, you'll know more than most patients walking into their first consultation.

Question Quick Answer
What is breast lift surgery? A surgical procedure (mastopexy) that lifts and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin, repositioning the nipple, and tightening the surrounding tissue. The size of your breast does not significantly change — its position and shape do
Who it's for Women bothered by drooping breasts (ptosis) — usually after pregnancy/breastfeeding, after significant weight loss, or due to ageing and genetics. Best results when childbearing is complete, and weight is stable.
Won't make me bigger Correct. A breast lift restores position and youthful contour. If you also want more volume, we add implants or fat transfer (aug-pexy) — discussed in detail below.
Surgery time 2.5 to 5 hours, depending on technique
Anaesthesia General anaesthesia. You are fully asleep, under the care of a board-certified anaesthesiologist
Hospital stay Day care or one night, depending on your case.
Scars Yes — there will be scars. They fade significantly over 12–18 months but never fully disappear. Concealable under most bras and bikinis. Different techniques = different scar patterns. All explained inside.
Recovery Back to desk work in 7–10 days. Light walking from day 1. No heavy lifting for 4 weeks. Surgical bra for 6 weeks. Full healing in 6–12 months.
Breastfeeding after Usually still possible. The risk of partial reduction in milk supply depends on the technique chosen. Important conversation in consultation.
Nipple sensation Most patients regain full sensation in weeks to months. A small percentage have a permanent change. Risk varies by technique.
How long does the results last 10–15 years or more with stable weight. Pregnancy after surgery will affect results — best to complete your family first.
Cost in Vijayawada ₹1,40,000 – ₹3,50,000 for breast lift alone. ₹2,20,000 – ₹4,80,000 if combined with implants or fat transfer.
Surgical Codes CPT 15825 (Rhytidectomy, neck), CPT 15876 (Submental Lipo)

Candidacy is determined through an in-person physical evaluation, medical history review, and realistic goal setting. A breast lift can help improve breast shape, reposition the nipples, and restore a firmer, more lifted appearance without necessarily changing breast size.

✓ Good Candidates

  • My breasts appear saggy or have lost their firmness.
  • My nipples point downward or sit below the breast crease.
  • My breasts have a flattened or elongated shape.
  • My breast skin feels stretched or has lost elasticity.
  • My weight has been relatively stable.
  • I have realistic expectations about surgical results.

✕ When to Wait or Reconsider

  • You’re planning a pregnancy soon — Pregnancy and breastfeeding can change breast shape and affect your surgical results.
  • Your weight is fluctuating — Significant weight changes can alter breast volume, skin elasticity, and long-term results.
  • You smoke or use nicotine — Nicotine can impair blood flow, increase wound-healing problems, and raise the risk of complications.

1. Preoperative assessment

Assess breast ptosis, breast volume, skin elasticity, asymmetry, nipple sensation, prior breast surgery, medical history, and patient expectations. Confirm appropriate breast imaging and screening based on age, symptoms, and clinical risk.

2.Preoperative markings

With the patient standing, assess the breast meridian, inframammary fold, nipple position, breast footprint, and planned skin envelope. Select the periareolar, vertical, or Wise-pattern design according to the required correction

3. Anesthesia and positioning

The procedure is commonly performed under general anesthesia in an appropriately equipped operating theatre. Positioning and preparation must allow safe access to both breasts and repeated assessment of symmetry.

4. Skin-envelope management

The selected pattern determines how much skin is removed and how the breast is reshaped. The operative plan must account for tissue tension, scar placement, breast projection, and preserving adequate tissue to support the nipple–areola complex.

5. Nipple–areola complex repositioning

The NAC is repositioned using a technique selected for the patient's anatomy and required elevation. Maintaining its arterial inflow, venous drainage, and appropriate tissue support is a central safety consideration.

6. Breast reshaping and symmetry assessment

The surgeon may reshape or support breast tissue as indicated. Before final closure, the surgeon evaluates contour, projection, nipple position, skin tension, and bilateral symmetry.

7. Closure and postoperative care

The incisions are closed in layers according to the chosen technique. The team assesses hemostasis, tissue perfusion, wound tension, and dressings. Postoperative care includes pain control, wound monitoring, activity guidance, and scheduled follow-up.

Will a breast lift make my breasts bigger?

A. No. A breast lift restores the position, shape, and youthful contour of your existing breast. If you want more volume, we combine the lift with implants or fat transfer in a single surgery — discussed in detail in your consultation

How visible will my scars be after a breast lift?

A. Initially red and slightly raised, scars fade significantly between 6 and 18 months. They are positioned around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and (for anchor technique) along the breast crease itself. None cross the upper chest. They are concealable under bras, swimsuits, and most necklines.

Is breast lift surgery painful?

A. Most patients describe day 1–3 as soreness rather than sharp pain — comparable to a heavy workout. We manage this with a combination of IV pain medication initially, then oral tablets. By day 7, most patients only need occasional paracetamol.

How soon can I go back to work after a breast lift?

A. Most patients return to desk work in 7–10 days. Jobs involving lifting, intense physical labour, or extensive arm use need 4 weeks. We give you a personalised plan based on what you do.

Will I be able to breastfeed after a breast lift?

A. Usually yes — most patients retain breastfeeding ability. The risk of reduced milk supply is small but real, and depends on the technique used. If preserving breastfeeding is critical, tell us at the consultation — we adjust accordingly.

When can I exercise again after surgery?

A. Light walking from day 1. Lower-body exercise around week 3. Upper-body exercise, running, swimming, yoga involving chest stretches: from week 6 onwards. We give you a clear return-to-fitness timeline at your post-op visit

How long do the results of a breast lift last?

A. Typically 10–15 years or more with stable weight. Pregnancy after the surgery will partially reverse the results. Most women who complete their family before surgery don't need a revision.

Will I lose nipple sensation permanently?

A. Most patients regain full sensation within 3–6 months. A small percentage (5–10%) have some permanent change — usually a mild reduction in sensitivity. Complete permanent loss is rare.

Can I do a breast lift if I plan to have more children?

A. You can, but we usually recommend completing your family first. Pregnancy and breastfeeding will affect the lift result. If you're certain you need it now (for medical or strong personal reasons), we can use a technique that better preserves breastfeeding.

How do I know I'm choosing the right surgeon for this?

A. Look for: board certification in plastic surgery (M.Ch is the gold standard in India), volume of breast lifts performed annually, before-and-after photographs of past patients, accreditation of the operating facility, a board-certified anaesthesiologist, a transparent written quote, and no high-pressure same-day booking. Dr Pratap meets all of these. Visit, ask, and decide for yourself.
