WhatsApp UsBefore we go into medicine, let me say something I tell every patient who sits across from me. If you have been hiding your chest under loose shirts. If you wore a vest to the swimming pool. If you crossed your arms in the wedding photograph. If you have googled "how to get rid of man boobs" at 1 a.m., you are in the right place. I am Dr Pratap Duggirala. I have been a plastic surgeon in Vijayawada for over 15 years. I have operated on engineering students from Guntur, IT professionals from Hyderabad and other metro cities, NRI patients from Dubai, farmers from Krishna district, and grandfathers from Visakhapatnam. The youngest patient I have helped was 16. The oldest was 71
When you go to the gym and lose weight, you can only burn the middle layer — the fat. The gland sits underneath the fat, attached to the skin and nipple. You cannot exercise a gland. That is why you can drop from 92 kg to 72 kg, see your abs starting to show, and still have two pointy nipples that show through every fitted shirt.
Place two fingers on your nipple right now. Press inward, gently. If you feel a firm disc — like a stack of two or three one-rupee coins glued together — sitting behind the nipple, that disc is your breast gland. Every man has one. It is normally the size of a small button, the size of your fingernail, and you cannot feel it. In gynaecomastia, that button has grown. Sometimes to the size of a 10-rupee coin. Sometimes to the size of a small lemon. Sometimes only on one side. Sometimes both
Anatomy & Surgical Foundations
- 1. Structural Tissue Assessment Every individual anatomy is distinct. We precisely evaluate skin elasticity, adipose layer thickness, and muscular fascia before tailoring the operative vector.
- 2. Surgical Precision & Symmetry Using microsurgical instruments and high-definition power-assisted technology, incisions are placed strictly in natural, concealed shadows.
- 3. Core Muscle & Fascia Restoration True aesthetic contouring repairs the deep supporting architecture, not just superficial tissue.
If you only read this table, you'll know more than most patients walking into their first consultation.
| Question | Quick Answer |
|---|---|
| What is Gynaecomastia? | Gynaecomastia is a firm tissue under the nipple in men, not just fat. You can feel a button-like lump. It can be on one side or both. It is medical, not your fault, and very common — 1 in 3 men experience it at some point. |
| Will it go away on its own? | Puberty-related cases sometimes do, within 6–24 months. Cases lasting more than 2 years, or that appear in adulthood, won’t resolve on their own. Hence, surgery is crucial. |
| Do exercise, diet, or fat burners work? | They reduce fat. They do not dissolve glandular tissue. That's why gym-fit men still have "puffy nipples." |
| Is surgery the only permanent cure? | For true (glandular) gynaecomastia — yes. Surgery is the only proven, permanent solution. |
| Is it painful? | Surgery is done under anaesthesia — you feel nothing during it. The first 2–3 days are sore, manageable with simple painkillers. Most men return to office work in 5–7 days |
| What does it cost in Vijayawada? | Approximately ₹75,000 – ₹1,20,000 at Pratap Hospital, depending on grade, technique, and anaesthesia. You will receive a fixed quote after consultation. |

Gynecomastia surgery is generally considered for persistent breast enlargement that does not resolve after observation or treatment of its underlying cause. Surgery should be postponed when breast development is ongoing, a treatable cause remains unaddressed, or medical risks need optimization. Suspicious breast symptoms require diagnostic evaluation before cosmetic treatment.
✓ Good Candidates
- Breast enlargement has persisted and is unlikely to resolve spontaneously.
- The underlying cause has been evaluated and any treatable cause addressed.
- Breast size is stable, particularly after puberty.
- The patient experiences persistent pain, discomfort, social embarrassment, or significant psychological distress.
- The patient is medically fit and understands the expected results, scars, recovery, and risks.
- Weight and relevant medical conditions are sufficiently stable for the planned procedure.
✕ When to Wait or Reconsider
- Active smokers who cannot pause for 4 weeks or unstable weight
- Pubertal gynecomastia of recent onset
- Suspected hormonal imbalance or medication-related cause
- Active infection or skin problems around the surgical site
- Poorly controlled diabetes or significant medical illness

2: Day of Surgery
Arrive at the hospital ~6:30 a.m. (fasting from midnight) Admission and pre-op preparation: ~1 hour Anesthesia consultation with our consultant anesthetist. Surgery begins: 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on grade Recovery room: 1–2 hours Discharge same day (most patients) or next morning (Grade III)
3: The Actual Procedure
For most patients (Grade I–IIb), the procedure is a precise combination: a) Tumescent Liposuction (20–40 mins): A salt-water + numbing solution is infiltrated into the chest. Through two tiny 3 mm holes (one on each side, hidden in the chest crease), a thin cannula vacuums out the fat. We sculpt the chest contour like a sculptor — careful, gradual, symmetrical. b) Glandular Excision (15–30 mins): A small 3–4 cm semicircular incision is made along the lower border of the areola (the dark area around the nipple). Through this hidden cut, we remove the firm gland. We leave a small disc of tissue behind the nipple — this is critical — to prevent the dreaded "saucer deformity" (a sunken nipple). c) Skin Tightening (if needed): For Grade IIb and III, we use either VASER ultrasound-assisted lipo or laser-assisted lipo to tighten the inner skin layer. For Grade III, we use a planned skin excision pattern. d) Closure & Dressing: Skin is closed with dissolving sutures (no stitch removal). A sterile dressing and a tight compression vest are applied immediately.
4: Going Home
You walk out (yes, walk — not on a stretcher) You wear the compression vest for the next 4–6 weeks We give a printed recovery plan and a WhatsApp number

Get My Itemized QuoteQ1. Is gynaecomastia safe? Can it turn into cancer?
Gynaecomastia itself is not cancer and does not turn into cancer. It is benign (non-cancerous). However, in rare cases, breast cancer can occur in men and may look like gynaecomastia in early stages, which is why a one-time clinical evaluation is always recommended, especially if you notice any red flags (hard lump, dimpling, discharge, rapid growth on one side)
Q2. What is the right age to have gynaecomastia surgery?
For most patients, 18 years and above is ideal — once growth has stabilised. But there is no upper age limit. We have operated on men in their 60s with excellent results. The "right age" is whenever the condition has persisted for over 1–2 years and is affecting your life.
Q3. Will I be admitted overnight or is it a daycare procedure?
For Grade I and most Grade IIa cases — it's a daycare procedure. You go home the same evening. For Grade IIb and III, we typically suggest a one-night stay for closer observation, though this isn't strictly necessary in all cases.
Q4. Can I see before-and-after photos of your previous patients?
Yes — during your in-person or video consultation. We do not display patient photos publicly online out of respect for privacy, even with consent. In our clinic, you can view a portfolio of past results matching your grade.
Q5. How soon after surgery can I return to work / college / gym?
Office/college (sedentary work): 5–7 days Light physical activity/walking: Day 3 Driving: After 7 days Light gym (legs, core): 4 weeks Full gym including chest: 6 weeks Swimming, contact sports: 6–8 weeks
Q6. Will my insurance cover gynaecomastia surgery in India?
Sometimes, yes. If you have documented physical symptoms (pain, tenderness, posture issues) or a significant psychological impact (with a psychiatric note), several insurers in India will cover it partially or fully. We handle all paperwork at no extra cost. Pure cosmetic cases are usually not covered.
Q7. Will the surgery affect my ability to build chest muscle/bench press later?
No. The surgery removes tissue above the chest muscle. Your pectoral muscle is completely untouched. In fact, many patients tell us their chest workouts look better post-surgery because the chest contour finally shows.
Q8. Can gynaecomastia come back after surgery?
If we remove the gland properly (which is our standard technique), it won't grow back—it's permanently removed. However, the fat in the chest area can return if you: Gain significant weight Start anabolic steroids Begin a new medication that causes gynecomastia In our 15+ years of practice, true recurrence is rare.
Q9. I'm scared to come in person. Can you guide me first via WhatsApp / phone?
Absolutely yes. Many of our patients first reach out on WhatsApp—sending photos privately and asking questions over text. We respond personally, professionally, and confidentially. There is no obligation. When you're ready, we'll schedule an in-person consultation. You drive the pace. WhatsApp: +91-8712022521
Q10. How do I know if I should choose Dr Pratap over other surgeons?
You shouldn't choose us unthinkingly. Here's our honest advice: Verify the surgeon is M.Ch (Plastic Surgery) — not just MBBS or MS Ask how many gynecomastia surgeries they do per month Ask to see their scar quality in past patients Ask who personally performs your surgery — the senior or a junior? Read genuine Google reviews (look for ones with details, not just stars) Trust how the first consultation feels — were you rushed? Was the cost transparent?
"At 52, I hated how my neck looked in photos at family functions. Dr. Pratap performed a neck lift and lipo. The result looks completely natural — friends tell me I look refreshed and energetic."
